| by Innomax Solutions | September 25, 2008
Silver unlike gold that does not react at room temperature, silver does so over a period of time and the end result is called tarnish. Tarnish is a result of a chain of reactions called oxidation. To prevent this they are a few things that one can do.
1 keep the jewelry in container that are airtight as this will slow down the reactions that take place. Never place your silver jewelry with other jewelry as that scratches the surface and causes uneven tone. Bags that one can use to store jewelry are available at most jewelry shops but if that is not an option the you can always use like zip up bags but always avoid zip up plastic bags as tarnish can still occur if the jewelry is in these type of bags.
2 Avoid direct sunlight, humid areas and furnisher like tables that are frequently being cleaned with chemicals and not forgetting constant rubbing against hard surfaces .
3 chalk naturally absorbs chemicals that may cause tarnish and hence it is
Advisable that one puts a piece of chalk among the jewelry
4 jewelry shops sell anti-tarnish strips that have the same effect as chalk that is absorbing all the chemicals in the atmosphere that cause tarnishing .they are sold in many places besides jewelry stores .
5 most people will be familiar with the small bags that are usually put in shoes or medicine cabinets and the small bags contain white balls believe it or not they can also be used to prevent tarnish the bags are called silica packs.
Jewelry holds sentimental value for most people and for what ever they mean to you it is best you care for them as you would for what ever they represent.
