What to see in Prague

| by Claire Hillary | April 21, 2008
Prague continues to be one of the most popular cities in Europe, coming behind only London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin in terms of the number of foreign visitors last year. And what's more that number is increasing, says Czech Tourism in a new report.
But there has been an obvious change in where those tourists are coming from: after many years in which the greatest number of visitors came from Germany, in 2004 they were overtaken by the British, almost 600,000 of whom visited the "city of a thousand spires". This change has been attributed to the wide availability of cheap flights to Prague from many European cities.
Moreover Prague hotels have developed a lot. You can of course choose various accommodation possibilities in Prague - for example: Accommodation in Prague hotels, Prague hostels, Prague pensions, or you may rather prefer accommodation in apartments.
Searching the accommodation in Prague according to price, type of accommodation (Prague hotels, hostels, pensions, apartments; in case of Prague hotels according to the number of stars = the hotel's quality) is common place, as well as online reservation and several possibilities of payment (including payment by credit card). This kind of accommodation is popular with visitors of Prague because of its low price and numbers of places available.
The city, contrary to many places that are available to tourists only for the summer, does not stop living during the winter months. A New Year’s Eve spent in Prague may be an unforgettable experience. Nothing remains but to check it out. Music clubs and theatres offering a repertoire open to all people without regard to their language differences are plentiful. Or if you prefer this could be replaced by a pleasant experience from, for example, a walk in one the most interesting European Zoos in Prague Troja. Try a ride on a Prague cruiser on the Vltava river or stretching your muscles on bicycle routes leading even through the historical centre. If you like sport, there are indoor swimming pools and hundreds of sports fields for myriads of sports from golf and tennis through to a bobsleigh run, skateboarding and in-line skating.
Prague Castle is the most popular sight visited in Prague which you can see from windows of Prague hotel where you stay. It is the largest ancient castle in the world (570 m long, on average 128 m wide, area 7.28 hectares). Constructed in the 9th century by Prince Boøivoj, the castle transformed itself from a wooden fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has today.
Next place to visit is Prague Old Town. It was mentioned in 1091, it is the oldest of the towns of Prague gained the privileges of a town in the 13th century. However, its name dates back to the 14th century when the New Town was founded. The centre of the Old Town has always been the Old Town Square dominated by the Church of Our Lady of Týn and the Town Hall.
After visiting Prague sightseeing you should take a short journey through the Czech countryside to reach Karlstejn Castle, an outstanding medieval castle founded and built by the mighty Emperor Charles IV. Constructed between 1348-1355, Karlstejn was the main depository of the Emperor's coronation jewels and state documents for the whole Empire.
