The southernmost is popularly known as the Lighthouse Beach. Kovalam offers accommodation options to suit all budgets.
It is an enchanting strip of golden sands laced with the rich greenery of coconut palms. Kovalam is a former fishing village, it is just 16 kms away from Trivandrum, kerala’s capital city. Kovalam- Beach: Kovalam beach is located at sixteen kms south of Trivandrum city. It is only a hours drive from Trivandrum city. Kovalam is the most famous south Indian Beach due to its Natural beauty and fine sand washed beach which makes sunbath on these silver sands possible. Kovalam beach is the most famous South Indian beach. Mainly there are two beaches in Kovalam along with many private beaches. Eve’s beach is a semi-circular one, well known for its secluded location and its relatively good beach area. Another famous beach is that of Lighthouse beach where a lighthouse situates, which belong to the British period. Water Sports At Kovalam Beach: Kovalam is a natural bay ideal for kayaking, swimming, surfing and skiing. One can swim in the shallow blue water and have a sun-bath in the exotic tropical sun lying on the vast silvery fling sands. The coastal area is also rowed with exquisite tatters of coral reefs and also zenith the waves breaking on the shore on logs of fastened woods on catamarans.
Backwater Cruiser: From Kovalam, you can take a backwater cruise to the ravishing backwoods of Kerala, riding country boats and luxuriating in its picturesque splendor of greenery. The facilities of houseboats, country boats and catamarans are even offered by some hotels for the tourists at reasonable rates.
Kovalam- Season: The tourist arrival starts at the end of September which lasts till the end of March. The peak season is between mid- December till mid- January. In winter the average temperature is 30-32 degree Celsius whereas the summer temperature is 30-35 degree Celsius. The monsoon starts at the beginning of June, which lasts till the beginning of August. The second turn of monsoon starts at the end of October for the next two weeks.
Private Beaches in Kovalam: Among innumerable beach holiday resorts Kovalam Ashok Beach Resort, Surya Samudra Beach Garden, Somatheeram, Niki’s Nest, Cocunut Bay Beach Resort, Uday Samudra Beach Resort, Hotel Samudra etc own private beaches famous for their cleanliness and secluded location. Most of these private beaches are located near Vizhinjam at least 8 kms far from Kovalam.
Kovalam- Govt. Art Museum: Formally known as Napier Museum, the museum blends traditional Kerala styles with Chinese and Mughal architecture.
Kovalam- Zoo: One of the best maintained zoos in Asia, it has beautiful expensive lawns. Science and Technology Museum, This museum is of high educative value for students of science and technology.
Shopping In Kovalam: the shops of Kovalam offer an array of handicraft items made of wood, seashell and so on. The statues made of teak wood and Rose wood is popular here. For an elaborate shopping Trivandrum city is ideal.
Kovalam Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary with its rich fauna and birds is dotted with large hills with forests and eucalyptus plantations.
