Stars in the spotlights of the Italian society
| by Bob Taylor | June 26, 2007
What does Gorge Clooney have in common with Valentino? They both got in the headlines of the Italian media. While Clooney made furore at Lake Como, the top designer Valentino scandalized his audience at the Man Fashion Show in Milan with five topless dancers at his menswear show on Monday. The nude dancers participated at his presentation for spring and summer 2008 behind a mock-up cocktail bar. The show, within the show of dancers, took, of course away the attention from the line-up of designs which Valentino suggested for next spring. Valentino, celebrating 45 years as a designer this year, stuck to a classic, colonial look for his boys for the next hot season, decking them out in creams, beiges and petrol blues. Valentino, whose brand is being bought by private equity fund Permira in a deal valuing it at 2.6 billion euros, emerged after the shows to take a bow in a conservative beige suit with classic blue and white broad striped shirt.

However, in a white and sweaty shirt George Clooney joined a protest at Lake Como to stop the construction pans of the mayor of Laglio, where Clooney owns a villa. Lake Como, which is famous for its beautiful places and the peace and quietness surrounding it. The mayor of Laglio wants to spend 15 Million Dollars for building parking spaces and a pontoon bridge which would pass right in front of the Hollywood heart-throb's house.
The star, who, is urging his neighbours 300 town people - to sign a petition against further development of the town is apparently very involved in this protest. In the past, strict planning laws have curbed development around the lake, leaving small, unspoilt towns along its shores. The rich and famous have always considered Lake Como the perfect spot for mountain air, spectacular views and seclusion. Clooney bought his villa in 2002 for about 10 Million Dollars. But since he arrived in Laglio, things have begun to change. Tourists are coming up to the small town to visit where George Clooney lives. So the star took the unusual step of attending a meeting of the Laglio protest committee this week to add his voice to the chorus of neighbourhood objection. "This has to come to an end," said the actor-turned-civic protester. "I don't want my presence here affecting the local population. The building work is only being done because I live here. And unless it stops I'm going to have to move." The actor has now added his name to the petition to stop the work.
