Skimming with skimboards

What is skimming?

Skimboarding which is also called or skimming is usually used to ride on an inward wave. For skimming or skimboarding you need a skimboard. The technique of skimboarding is slightly different from that of surfing.

What is the structure of the skimboard?

The craft of which varies in size, may be oval or tear-drop shape and used by the skimboarders is called skimboard. There is a tail part in a skimboard which are occasionally in the shape of squash-tail or fishtail. The best size board may be of your chest’s height. Usually the skimboards are between 3/4 inch and 5/8 inches in their thickness. There are actually three types of rockers which are traditionally used for skimboarding. One is called a constant rocker (provides better control fro daily skimboarders), the other is a hybrid rocker with a curved bottom and the third one is a traditional rocker which are completely flat.

Parts of skimboard:

The Board: The skimboard consists of a board which is made with either wood or foam. They have a shorter, wider shape and consist of fiberglass and a tough polyurethane foam core. This combination makes the skimboard much lighter than wood board, yet has a larger surface area and is meant for deep sea journeys.

The Grip: They are meant for proper gripping of the skimboard so that the skimboarder does not fall off. The grip is usually made of such material so as to provide a solid grip.

Technique of using the skimboards:

• “One-step” method of skimboarding: Skimboarding starts on the beach. The skimboarder usually stands at a running distance from the water with the skimboard in hand and waits for a wave to arrive. When the wave ultimately comes, the skimboarder runs with the skimboard into the water. The board is usually laid in the thinner part of the receding water. If the conditions are favorable then the board can also be placed in the thicker section of the water. There are also other methods which are known as “two-step” and “no-step methods”.

• "Run, Drop, Slide" method: The skimboarder’s main attempt is to slide to the wave either by "pumping" or "sideslipping" in order to maintain speed. This is also known as "Run, Drop, Slide" method. When the rider reaches the wave, he tries to climb "down the line", or he may attempt to launch off the wave face and try to perform an aerial trick. "Monkey Crawl" is yet another method of skimboarding.

Beachmart can help you buy the best skimboards. They have the largest selection with different designs.
