Nicaragua Emerging as Tourism Hot Spot
| by Catherine Cunningham | July 19, 2008
Nicaragua has had a troubled history. It seems that every time that the country attempts to get back on its feet, it is hit by political unrest or natural disasters. Only 20 years ago Nicaragua was a disaster zone, the country was in the midst of a civil war and was battered by Hurricane Hugo. Only 10 years prior the country was devastated by an earthquake.
A common misconception is that Nicaragua is a dangerous country. Prior to visiting Nicaragua there are always words of warning, and advice on staying safe. Where did this view come from? Nicaragua is in fact one of the safest countries in the whole region. People view Costa Rica as a safe country to travel in, when in fact there is more street crime, muggings and pick-pocketing.
A country needs time to heal and repair; war stays in peoples minds for a long time. In 20 short years it seems that Nicaragua has managed to get over the war and turn itself into a major player in the tourism industry.
Why has Nicaragua grown as a tourist destination? Untouched beaches and forests? Cheap living compared to countries such as the US or UK? Adventure? Beautiful historic colonial cities? Perhaps all of this plus year round warm weather.
Nicaragua offers something for every type of traveler. San Juan del Sur in the south is very popular with surfers. There are plenty of hotels to suit every budget, and bars and restaurants that line the beach offering spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean sun sets. The Corn Islands off the Caribbean coast offers untouched beaches with modest lodgings; you can spend your days snorkeling and fishing or relax under a palm tree on the pristine beaches. For travelers who prefer city life you can visit Granada or Leon, both impressively preserved colonial cities. For the more adventurous you can visit Ometepe; climb one of the two volcanoes and swim in the lake at the top of the volcano.
Another reason that Nicaragua has emerged as tourism destination is due to its rich Culture. Due to the low living costs many travelers are choosing to spend extended amounts of time in Nicaragua so that they can learn Spanish and spend time living with Nicaraguan families so that they can gain a true understanding of Nicaragua, its people, its history and its culture.
