Greece: Invest in a pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection
| by G. Papas | February 18, 2008
Invest in a pair of sunglasses with 100% UV protection. This could help prevents eventual development of cataracts. And don't forget to get a pair for your children.
Going on vacation? Maybe even to a sunny Greek island? http://www.toplink.gr/gr … index.html Don't forget your sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from damage by ultraviolet light rays. In fact, the most important feature to look for in a sunglass lens is how much UV radiation it can absorb. Purchase lenses with 100% protection. It is also good to buy lenses that were ground, offering minimum distortion, rather than punched.
If you have a favourite pair of sunglasses, you can take them to an optician and ask to have the UV protection level tested. It will take just a few moments for a meter to read the light coming through your lenses. UV rays are invisible, but burn skin and damage eyes. Scientists have found evidence linking UV exposure to cataracts. The color of your lenses is a personal preference.
Certain colors affect color perception as well as brightness and contrast levels. A grey-green lens was developed for pilots. These lenses will darken the world, but not change colors.
In addition to UV protection, some sunglasses are polarized. Polarization does not admit light coming horizontally. Therefore the lenses block light being reflected from the water or from a highway and reducing glare.
Outdoor activities like mountain biking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, skiing, golfing and in-line skating have led to creation of extreme performance-oriented sunglasses, which are lightweight, flexible and durable with no-slip components. An important aspect of sports sun wear is the optical quality. Lens colors that are particularly effective are now available. And polycarbonate lenses that are strong and impact-resistant appeal to sportsmen.
Children may not be interested in the fashion aspect of sunglasses, but they need as much protection from the sun as adults do. Some may need even more, since kids spend more time outdoors in direct sunlight.
There is a large variety of children's sunglasses available. Designs are being developed which appeal to kids. Oval, round, rectangular, cat-eye and geometric shapes are popular in colors like greens, blues, tortoise and black.
