Internet Marketing - Getting a New Site into Google
| by Daiv Russell | January 25, 2008
Do you run one of the thousands of businesses who just designed a website but has no visitors? One of the biggest falsehoods about online marketing is that simply having a website brings you visitors who turn into paying clients - however, it just doesn't seem to work out. An unfortunate many believe in what I refer to as "Field of Dreams" web marketing, thinking "If you build it, they will come."
Have you been wondering:
Why does online marketing seem to work for a handful people, but not others?
How long will it be until my website starts showing up in Google?
When will [my website] begin earning money?
Is my site even listed in Google?
Just because you set up your site, doesn't mean that Google will index your site. It's easy to verify if Google has found your site by searching on Google for "site:mydomain.tld", e.g.: "site:free-reprint-articles.com". If your search comes back with any results at all, Google has found and crawled your site. If your search results show the infamous "Your search did not match any documents", they've never heard of you â they just don't know that your site exists at all.
How do I get my site into Google?
Sure, you could "submit" your web site to Google, but that puts your in a looooong queue of sites hoping to get added. The absolutely best choice for getting added quickly is to get a link to your site â anywhere. Once you have a link to your site, and Google stumbles that link, your site will be set up for fast-indexing.
So how do you get that first link?
There are a number of ways to do this, cost effectively. You can:
Ask a friend to place a link to your site,
Submit a guestbook entry and include a link to your site,
Post a comment on someone's web log with a link to your site,
Set up your own blog on LiveJournal.com and link to your site,
Open an account on a social bookmarking web site like Reddit and add a bookmark for your site,
Author a free reprint article and post it to SearchWarp, EZineArticles, or Free-Reprint-Articles.com
The more regularly Google checks the web site where your link was placed, the faster Google will know that a page out there linked to you. Some pages are scanned as seldom as once every few months, other places are checked several times every hour. The quickest means to get your site crawled are using social bookmarking services or article marketing.
If you can get to your site logs, look through the records for visits by an agent called GoogleBot. This is the bot used by Google to discover websites. After you discover that Google has started crawling your site, it doesn't take long until your site: search shows a few of your pages. Regrettably, that is the beginning of your journeyâ¦
So, when will my website start getting traffic?
Now that your site is indexed, why doesn't it appear in the search engine results? If you dug through each search engine result, you'll notice that site is near the end of results for any search but your company name. And if your business name is pretty widespread, you're likely at the bottom of that list, too.
Playing in the Sandboxâ¦
Your site will get stuck in a special state that dubbed} "the sandbox". Even [though your site may be really] well linked, liked, and built - it just doesn't show up on search results until it has aged adequately for Google to believe that your site is not a spam-site.
The amount of time your site hangs out in the sandbox relies on many factors and Google won't spill the beans. The vital thing to bear in mind is that online marketing is a long-term effort. There aren't any magic pills your web site can take to defeat the search engines. They do their best to ensure that searchers are given the best search results. Making your site endure the sandbox is Google's mechanism for meeting surfers needs and keeping their ranking as the best search engine.
