Weight Loss Programs-What Works?
| by Leo di Milo | March 31, 2008
If you are reading this, then most likely you are wanting to find a way to lose a little weight or make a lifestyle change. Perhaps you want to start a weight loss program. That said, there are so many weight loss programs out there that can be beneficial to you losing weight and keeping it off BUT there are just as many weight loss programs that can create a myriad of problems. So, before you decide to try a weight loss program, be sure to consult an expert or contact your doctor to make sure the program doesn't conflict with your body.
The good news is that in most cases, if you follow a weight loss program faithfully, chances are you will lose weight. The problem actually comes when you decide to come off a program and resume doing what you were doing before you went on the program. This is the largest problem that most people face and the result is the yo-yo effect in which someone goes on a diet, loses weight, only to watch as they put the weight they just lost gain it all back. In some cases, they actually gain more weight after discontinuing the weight loss program.
So, how do you prevent this from happening?
Most people don't want to hear this but the culprit actually has to do with their lifestyle more than a diet. Frankly, diets don't work but lifestyle changes do work. Most people who are trying to lose weight get discouraged when they are only losing 1-2 pounds a week but this is actually the most healthy way to lose the weight and keep it off. If you are losing anymore weight, it is likely that it isn't done in a safe way and you are not giving yourself enough time to adjust to a new lifestyle change.
When choosing a weight loss program, you should look for one that can be sustained for a long time. In other words, while diets such as the "cabbage" diet work short term, it is not likely that you will continue on it for months. Instead, you will likely lose the weight you want and then get bored with the diet, "fall off the horse" and resume doing the same things you were doing in the first place.
