Lessons in Dropping the Ball – Part 2

| by Mark Victor Hansen | October 27, 2007
In Part 1 of this article, we discussed the courage, point of view, and an understanding it takes to successfully drop the ball and get more done. Here are the last two important lessons you need.

Lesson 4: Eliminate Urgency
So many of the little balls in our life never had to be there in the first place. They come up as urgent tasks because we didn’t attend to more important things in the first place.

We find ourselves in a panic at the end of the month trying to reach our sales goals because we have not spent the time to build great relationships with our most important clients.

Work on things that are important, not things that are urgent, and you will find fewer urgent things in your life.

The lesson is the more you drop the ball on the small things to work on the big things, the fewer small things there are!

Lesson 5: Treat Your Own Time as Precious
Most people are drowning in rubbish that others have dumped on them. The reason is they do not treat their own time as precious.

Most people’s perceptions of us are formed by the perceptions we hold of ourselves. The people around us in essence mirror how we see ourselves.

If you do not see your time as being supremely important, neither will the people around you. If this happens, your life will be filled with small things. Other people will drop their balls on you. They will ask you to do trivial things and invite you to trivial events.

However, if you see your time as being extremely valuable, others will too. They will respect your time.

Dropping the ball is about your own sense of self-worth more than anything else, and you are the most valuable person in your life!
