Some people prefer the phone over IM, or vice-versa. But which is better really depends on the individual. Let's have a look at some of the factors weighing in.

Pros of IM:

- can help build comfort, connection, attraction, and anticipation before chatting on the phone or meeting in person

- good for women that are around a computer a lot and/or live with their parents/roommates

Cons of IM:

- requires very little investment from the girl, so she can still ignore you

- can make you seem too available

Pros of phone:

- more efficient

- good for women that are not around a computer a lot

Cons of phone:

- has the potential to infringe on some women's comfort level too soon, and can result in easier flaking

- risk of phone tag

Really, it largely depends on the individual. I know guys who happen to use IM a lot and they love it. For me personally, I have met many, many women whom I chatted with over IM first. There is no hard or fast rule.

Of added benefit, chatting over IM allows you to build your conversational skills if they are lacking. These are not too different from the skills used when chatting on the phone or in-person. This is more food for thought as you are still deciding which one is best to use.
