Great Tool in Marriage: Appreciation

| by AdeOluwa Ope. Adenaike | September 05, 2008
In every relationship, it is a strengthening tool. When you don’t learn to appreciate little and casual things, it may be a bit difficult to find reason to do it right when bigger things are done. There is an adage which says, “Appreciating someone well for a good done makes him willing to do more and go the extra mile”. In this way, relationships too can be improved.

Appreciation might be given with the aim of making the other person feel good. When you help others feel good, you make yourself feel better. Appreciating others could be as simple as saying thank you to them. For couples it could be a kiss, even in the public. It could also be done as an expression of being grateful for something, or to someone for enjoying their good gestures or qualities. It is simply a world of wonders. You can never imagine the good appreciating others can bring; it is always a world of surprises. As simple as it is, it can save a life.Real men are not those with though minds and positions but them who even without these live a lifestyle of appreciation. Some men and women, friends and those in dear relationships can’t just stick having to always appreciate people especially them of low rank; yet, it has stolen every gain of joy and lightness from their heart and relationships. Giving compliments, saying ‘thank you’, etc., are all ways of showing appreciation. The purpose can be:

To help others feel good or confident about themselves. Remember: you feel better in return.
To help them see that some are observing and appreciates their good gestures (i.e. giving approval).
To make effective a criticism; borne out of love.
To make someone know that his/her little efforts counts much.
And what are the advantages:

Most times, it makes you a friend of the one you are appreciating.
Can turn away the strongest foe. That is, it can make a sworn enemy reverse his evil plan.
Tells the world that you are forward looking.
Makes you keep smiles a longer time.
Makes you looks younger, healthier and loveable.
Makes people go searching out ways to be of greater help to you or at least, ready to help.
Makes your weakness less resentful.
Can make important people pay you attention.
Can often make people break rule to help you even when they have signed out; making them feel you are worth dying for.
Caution:

Do it whenever you feel like. Don’t hold it in. Don’t let the environment limit you. In fact, it should help you say it in the most appropriate and appealing way. When you postpone, it is either you feel it is not that necessary again or you have lost the effect it should carry. I have learnt also that appreciating in spite of environment gives a longer lasting effect for most people. Never tell a lie to compliment someone. Say the truth in the most flowery and concise manner. Don’t be verbose. Be real.
However, seek not to injure your recipients feeling.
Above all, whenever necessary, express it. Don’t postpone it. Do appreciate your friend, your partner.
