FireProof Your Marriage
| by Roy Miam | September 25, 2008
Each week we hear from couples who are struggling profoundly in their marriage. Marriage Issues like conflict, stress, intimacy, affairs, pornography are always topping the list of from real life couples like you. Many couples are doing well and their marriage is thriving. But many are in deep pain.
These are the types of struggles that are tackled head on in the forthcoming Sony-Provident motion picture Fireproof, from the producers of Facing the Giants. This is the story of fireman Caleb Holt, played by actor Kirk Cameron. Caleb's seven-year marriage is hanging in the balance under the pressures of work, long-standing household arguments and a personal battle with pornography.
As the couple prepares to enter divorce proceedings, Caleb's father challenges his son to make a 40-day commitment called, "The Love Dare." Caleb becomes frustrated throughout the process and finally asks his father, "How am I supposed to show love to somebody who constantly rejects me?" When his father explains that this is the love Christ shows to us, Caleb makes a life-changing commitment to God. He then faces his toughest job ever: rescuing his wife's heart.
As Director of Cornerstone Marriage & Family Ministries with years of experience in working with couples on marriage issues, I have never come across something as strong and potent as Fireproof in helping couples visualize the exactness of real life marriage. The producers, writers and actors do an exceptional job in portraying real life for many couples today. Yet, the brilliantly produced film radiates messages of authentic determination, faith and hope, even for those of us who have felt like giving up on our marriages.
This movie moved me deeply. Not only by surfacing memories -- faces of couples I worked with over the years -- but also because the movie sends distinct clear messages to our culture: "You can save your marriage. No matter how tough things get, there is hope. Don't give up. It's worth fighting for."
To illustrate the power and impact of this movie on your life and marriage, let me share a testimony by a man who attended a recent screening of Fireproof:
"I had the privilege of attending the pre-screening of Fireproof with my wife and our 20 year old son on Monday night. You would have to understand a part of my journey and how I can relate to "Caleb's" story. This movie touched my inner most being in so many ways. I laughed, I cried, and I felt God moving within me. I had just stepped down from a ministry area that I have been involved with for several years. I believe God was working on me during the movie and "speaking" to me that this was an area that He wanted to use me to touch other marriages. My wife could have walked away many years ago when I was fighting the demons in my life but she chose to stay. I don't deserve what she's done for me and our family."
Cornerstone is providing marriage resources and counseling to those couples profoundly impacted by the film. Fireproof opens in theaters September 26. Tell everyone you know to attend opening weekend this stirring expression of marital restoration. Pray with us that God will overlay this nation with a renewed sense of the beauty of marriage and revival fueled by blatant determination to have the kind of marriage that He intends for us all.
