Concentration

| by sarina | July 28, 2007
How important is concentration for your winllose ratio? My guess is that we would agree that concentration is terribly important. However, here is a scenario that might be familiar. On the way to the poker game, I have my little discussion with myself about patience, starting hands, emotional control, etc. When I arrive at the game, there are four or five guys I know and we spend a few moments kidding each other. I tell this one guy that he should take good care of himself because if something happened to him, I would be the ugliest man in the world. You know how this kidding goes. Sometimes this kidding gets out of hand.

BEING FLIPPANT COSTS ME MONEY

I am still in a flippant mood when I sit down behind my chips. We are still talking smart to each other. I crack wise a couple of times and playa marginal hand because I feel lucky. That hand gets cracked after I take it one card too long and I am stuck $27. I think, ''What the hell are you doing, Andy?" That glib feeling of being among friends has cost me some money. What did I lose? I lost $27 and my concentration.

When I sit down at the table, I want to be focused. I want to be centered. I want to win. I want to have all my intellectual powers concentrated on the game.

Talking smart and having a good time with the guys is a great feeling and sometimes I get carried away. Life should not be all business and directed, but when money is so dynamically related to concentration, I honestly fault myself for doing something I know is not in my best financial interest.

CONCENTRATION CREATES CONFIDENCE

Perhaps you have noticed how success breeds success in online poker UK. I believe that success is directly related to the confidence you have in yourself. When I can focus ¬when I can concentrate on the game, read the player's habits and tendencies, carefully watch my own play and hand selection, play after the initial decision to enter the action - my concentration communicates to the other players that I am serious about taking their money. I want the other players to fear me. I can gain that fear by concentrating on the game. When I sense that fear in them, my confidence rises. Unless I get put on tilt, which is happening on only rare occasions nowadays, concentration pays off. I love to talk smart with my friends, but talking smart has cost me bucks. So I try to smart talk away from the table, either over the lunch counter or over the phone. The online poker table is clearly the wrong place for me to lose concentration!
