Climb The Mountain Slowly

I recognize that some readers of this book are young pups, while some of us have gray at the temples and gray in the beard, as in my case. While once we thought being 30 was ancient, now 30 is in the distant past. The youngsters get impatient with us guys who take things a little slower, stopping to smell the blossoms and reveling in a sunset.
Let me point out that age has some tremendous advantages that allow us to use a lower gear, charge the mountain a chunk at a time and reflect on past opportunities that looked rosy at the beginning and did not stand the test.
An important lesson for me has been to find a comfortable niche in the learning process. A good bit of my misspent youth was invested in a frontal assault on whatever project appeared to be worthwhile at that moment. Life is an adventure, and I believed I should make the most of each moment and be as efficient as possible. I approached life in the same way I would go about killing a rattlesnake - with great vigor.
I still believe life to be an adventure. However, now my goal is to enjoy the journey and savor the uncertainties and eccentricities.
The big lesson for me has been to enjoy the learning process of whatever enterprise appeals to me.
poker has certainly been an appealing enterprise, and I have enjoyed the process of learning how to become a consistent winner. Fighting my youthful tendencies to charge the hill and learn all I can ASAP, I have chosen the path of leisurely learning. This has worked for me. Maybe it will for you.
