Why? Because an Alt character will save you a massive amount of time that would be wasted travelling back and forth to the Auction House. The idea is simple... when you accumulate items you can convert into gold, just transfer any readily saleable items to your Alt character. Then, after you log back into World of Warcraft as the Alt character, all you need to do is take the items to the Auction House. Of course you'll want your Alt to always stay near the Auction House to make things happen as quickly as possible.
