The Dilemma of East Timor's Elections

| by Olivio Martins | June 12, 2007
In 2002, after the withdrawal of Francisco Xavier do Amaral, Xanana Gusmao became the only Candidate for the Presidencial Elections and therefore got 80 something % and became the First President of the new East Timor but Second of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste.

In 2007,with 8 Candidates running for the Presidential Elections, it was very unlikely for any one candidate to be elected on the first round. Even Ramos Horta, with the support of the Church and Xanana's new CNRT Party, only managed to get 21.81%, second to Francisco Luolo with 27.89%.

The people of Timor Leste only had two choices: Vote for Luolo, a guerrilla fighter with no experience in corruption but still controlled by Dr. Alkatiri and ultimately return to the old ways of FRETILIN Maputo or make the ultimate sacrifice and vote for Ramos Horta, a good con artist, easier for negotiations. In case you are not aware, the results of May 9 Elections was not a clear victory for Ramos Horta but a clear message from the Timorese People that they were fedup with FRETILIN's policies and could not tolerate their abuse of power. No way they were going to vote for a FRETILIN Candidate.

Come June 30, the East Timorese people will once again go to the Polls to vote for their Party leader to lead the Government of the Nation. This time they will be 14 candidates running for the job of Prime Minister. We face a situation where Mr. Ramos Horta and Mr.Gusmao do not intend to hand over the power to the younger and more qualified younger generation. Mr. Horta, very skilfully and successfully conned the Church for Her support, hoping that he would be elected to the Presidency and Xanana to the Prime Minister so that they two could support each other without any Opposition. In view of the intentions of these two men, the International Community can help save the reputation of these two men by advising Xanana to withdraw his candidacy or ultimately help destroy evrything they've achived by allowing Xanana to get into the race and be disgraced.

Ramos Horta, when he's speaking to the Australian Government, he speaks words that the Australian Government want to hear. When he Speaks to the Chinese Government, he will speak words that the Chinese Government want to hear. And the same goes with the Indonesian Government, promising the Indonesians that Bahasa Indonesia will be greatly used in East Timor. Can any one guess who he is telling the truth? It's anybody's guess.
