| by Joan Young | January 16, 2006
Gold Star Wives of America, Inc. (GSW) is a national nonprofit organization of military widows (and widowers) that provides support, information on benefits and resources, and works to increase federal benefits for surviving spouses and children. GSW is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, in the office of Prime Management which provides services to nonprofit organizations. GSW began in 1945 and now has members whose spouses were killed in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as those whose spouses died from service related disabilities (such as Agent Orange exposure) or other operations the world over. There are nearly 10,000 active members.
Every February 14th Valentines Day the organization holds a fundraiser called the "Stay-at-Home Tea" where each member is sent an individual bag of tea. They are asked to invite friends or family and relax as you enjoy your tea and think about our organization and its future on this day. They are asked to make a contribution to support the organization. These contributions fund the organizations operations as well as help other veterans causes.
We welcome individuals and companies to also take time on this day and think about so many families in this country who have given the ultimate sacrifice by losing a husband, wife, father or mother to serve and protect our country. The organization accepts contributions from individuals and companies and also offers sponsorships that are noted in our national newsletter and on our web site www.goldstarwives.org. Please visit our web site to learn more about the organization. We welcome your support. Contributions may be mailed to: GSW, PO Box 361986, Birmingham, AL 35236 (please write: Stay-at-home Tea on your check.
