COLA (Not a Soda)
| by Daniel J. M. Galpin | September 06, 2007
The American public has been RAPED & PILLAGED by American businesses and our Senators & Congress has ALLOWED this to happen while they have lined their pockets doing what should have been done for all Americans: receiving an automatic COLA (Cost Of Living Adjustment). This isn't even considering how they may have lined their pockets with backhanded deals. They have FAILED their fiduciary duty to those they serve. Below are a few examples:
1) 21 years ago I worked as a bank teller making $6.00 hr. and minimum wage was about $3.50 hr., milk was about a dollar a gallon, a candy bar was 25 cents and at least 2.25oz and gas was about 75 cents a gallon. Today milk is near $5.00 dollars, the candy bar is 90 cents and 1/3 the size, 1.5oz, and gas about $3.00 per gallon. So what should that same teller job pay today and what does it pay and what should minimum wage be now? The bank teller pay should be about $28 hr. and only pays about $9 per hr. occurring to my banker when I ask her and minimum wage should be about $15.60 an hour and is currently about $5.85 an hour. While the cost of living has raised about 470% the paycheck only about 50%. Meanwhile business grow richer and richer buying up their competition and Congress gets it's COLA automatically!
2) Just in the last 10 years a 20oz bottle of soda has gone from about 79 cents to about $1.40. That's about an 80% increase, has your paycheck kept up? Congress' pay has!
3) My grandparents raised a family of 5 on one income with money to spare for vacations, investing and repairs; my grandfather was a construction worker. My parents raised a family of 4 on one income with NO money to spare. We rarely took vacations and when repairs were needed they robbed Peter to pay Paul. Today the average family had two incomes and live somewhat comfortable as my grandparents did. Only now it take TWO. If this trend continues, this generations children will be as my parents, strapped for cash for routely needed repairs and they can forget the vacations. Their children, this generations grandchildren, will need a THIRD household income. Where will it come from? Will they have to put their kids to work? Congress' children and grandchildren won't have to, their parents are paid a COLA.
American businesses have slowly bled Americans dry WHILE buying more companies to make MORE money and find new ways to LOWER the American wage! Our representatives have let them do it and don't seem to mind! While they receive a regular COLA, they DID NOT included this in any Bill for American workers and in the minimum wage legislation recently passed. We need an immediate mandatory COLA in place for the protection of the American worker AND an end to allowing American jobs to go outside of America.
We live in one of the greatest lands of the world. We have ALL the resources needed to be self-sufficient INCLUDING oil. Yet our government, past and present cares more about the wealth-fare of those outside America than those who pay them their paychecks. This is another example of their FAILED fiduciary duty.
I'm all for free enterprise, capitalism, possibly even globalization, but not by enslaving the American workers to that of a peasant as in the days of England's land Lords. Any society that expects it's citizens to live honest lives and work for a living, must pay those workers enough to cover the basic cost of living within the society they live. We once did that in this country before GREED rampantly became the ruling power. It is NO LONGER being done. We must return to a point of self protection as a nation or we won't really have to worry about the war on terror because we will self collapse.
I will go one step farther: America's greatest threat is not the terrorist, although they are a close second; rather, both big business and our representatives in DC who have been working together and seemly appear to be destroying the very nation we live in all for GREED and POWER.
