Passion Parents, Children and Business Settings

Many passion parents are involved in a home based business. At the top of the reasons passion parents have chosen to work from home is, they can spend more time with their children. It is the number one reason I quit my electrical engineering career to stay home. My husband and I recently attended a rally for a company and wanted to attend as a family.
My thought is, even if it costs me more to bring her, and there is a chance that either my husband or I may not be able to attend some of the function because we have to remove her if she starts to make noise or become distracting, it would be worth the benefits of including her. We thought we could sit in the back and provide her with activities such as coloring and quite toys to keep her busy. I have operated my business such that I want my daughter to see me working. My daughter has learned that when mommy is on the phone, she is working and that needs to be respected. She is growing up seeing her mother work. We are coloring as I write this article! I write a little and then comment on her picture or color with her. I love the flexibility of what I do!
I posted on a forum for mommies in business, requesting any suggestions about bringing her to the rally. On the forum, I suggested that more than 80% of the people in the direct sales industry are women. I asked how other women viewed bringing children to an event. The replies I received were not what I expected! I was met with a number of replies that were not supportive of anyone bringing children at all to a business meeting of any sort. One woman suggests that the fact a baby is cute is distracting enough so the baby should not be there, If I paid for an event I would be royally ticked to have a child there no matter how good they are. The cute, quiet one's are distracting too cause I'm watching how cute they are. One comment was, It really is not fair to those who attend to have someone elses child in attendance..no matter how well behaved.
My husband and I did take our three year old daughter to the rally. I was pleased to see that about twenty other passion parents brought their children! The company did provide a separate room with a big screen and audio. Some parents took their children in there and many stayed in the main room. A number of times from the stage, the speakers asked people to carry their conversations outside, but not once was there a need to ask the parent with children to step out!
I remember I visited a chiropractor who had her young children in the office with her. At first, I was annoyed, then I realized that perhaps I did not like it because it was different (we humans resist change!). Once I got past myself, I realized how lucky these children were to be with their mother in a safe and healthy environment. I could then appreciate that her children were there and embrace her children in the office. Do we have room to embrace the idea of making room at company functions for our children?
