Things you need to know before making a business website from scratch

So, you have decided to extend your clientele and go global. The first thing you would naturally turn to is to put your business online. After all, this is what everyone else seems to be doing. Well, yes. Unfortunately, many of them seem to be falling straight off the face of the Earth with their online business!

A business website is the tool that internet based businesses use to popularize their products and services online. Going global through internet based business websites makes excellent business sense because this is the easiest way in which you can broaden your business horizon. But, the question to ask is whether your business website needs to be ecommerce driven at all, in the first place.

Not all business websites are ecommerce driven; and just because your website does not have a shopping cart, it does not mean that yours is not a business website. To understand this difference, it is important to know the three basic kinds of websites. These are: static websites, content website and ecommerce website.

A static site is the basic website. However, it is not a collection of static pages, as many would have you believe. A static website can educate users about who you are and about your products/services. It can also effectively capture email information and collect leads, and in this way it helps you build a healthy opt-in list that you can use for telemarketing and email marketing campaigns. Static sites can lead search engines to you.

Content websites help you boost your business in a number of ways. Most of them charge a subscription fee. These sites also have a bit of third party advertising which earns their owners a sizeable sum of money. Additionally, content sites help you build your credibility and thus attract more business to you.

Finally, you have ecommerce enabled websites that go the whole nine yards. They popularize your web presence, attract clients and clinch deals for which you get paid online. These websites are generally more technology-intensive and require expert coding skills.

To build your business website from scratch, it is important for you to find what kind of site will suit you the most. The first and second types are not too difficult to build from scratch. A little HTML knowledge will help you tweak online templates and make them your own. However, a full fledged ecommerce website with all its varied tools and facilities are best left in the hands of an expert who can understand your needs and suggest the best way to get business done.

Many businesses make the mistake of building a website and then wondering what it is all about. They are not quite sure if they want to sell through their business website, or simply establish their presence. Do not make the same mistake. Have a clear idea about what you want your business website to do. Then, get it done!
