By definition, social media refers to online tools and platforms that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences and perspectives with each other. This is how Wikipedia defines social media. Social media has reinvented online interaction. Now, more than ever, people can freely talk about anything and everything including their product experiences.

What does this mean to marketing managers? Social media has a deep impact in online businesses. People can now express their appreciation and commendation about products and services; however, they can also complain about them. While the first brings positive results like higher sales and return on investment (ROI), the latter can be deadly.

The need for effective marketing strategies is more in demand today. Marketing is no longer a one-way message. Traditional web marketing requires marketing managers to simply present their products and services irregardless of how the way online users will receive them. But today, online users can express their praise or dismay. And more, their feelings and experiences can either make or break an online business.

If online users commend a certain product, more and more online users will become interested with the product. The online business offering that product will most likely get more customers and higher return on investment or ROI. The good things said about the product will attract many potential customers.

However, if online users complain about a product, even the most likely convertible customers will think twice about purchasing the same product. They don’t want to get frustrated about the product so they will now entertain new offers.

What They Say Affect Sales

What the online users say about the products and services affect the sales of the online business. This is one serious marketing factor that marketing managers should look into. The fact is that although marketing managers can’t do anything about what online users think, they can put on some influence. Web strategy for marketing managers is crucial. Web marketing with social media isn’t that easy.

But if you want online users to say good things about your products and services, give them the reason to do so. Offer products and services that are top quality. There will still be cases of unsatisfactory response but don’t fret over it, instead use it for your business’ benefit. Analyse what caused the dissatisfaction and improve your products and services to avoid the same complaint in the future. Social media actually helps marketing managers in further improving their business.
