Seal To Make a Meaningful Musical Tribute

| by Peter Ruppert | October 10, 2008
There is a long history of musicians playing the music of other musicians—called "covering" a song among musicians—some of them considered better than the originals and enjoying more commercial success as well.

A critically-acclaimed example was Natalie Cole's performance of her father's classic "Unforgettable" for which her voice was combined with the original recording. It proved that, sometimes, a cover can be a deeply-felt tribute to the work and life of another artist. A more recent example is Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow's cover of the Gram Parson's classic "Juanita" which received much acclaim among critics and audiences alike.

British-based singer songwriter Seal has performed several covers over his career, including a popular rendition of The Steve Miller Band's "Fly Like An Eagle". The November 2008 release of "Soul" however, will mark a new chapter in Seal's career and, likely, the debut of an album that will be regarded as among his finest.

Seal's versatile baritone voice lends itself to challenging, diverse material. For "Soul" he will be performing covers by such soul music legends as Otis Redding and James Brown, no small feat, to be sure. However, Seal is more than up to the challenge and to make sure the album's quality was consummate with the legendary names who wrote the featured material, he enlisted the help of David Foster, a producer with a reputation that spans decades, genres and the music industry as a whole.

Seal described the experience of working with Foster as the most enjoyable he'd ever had recording an album and the two formed a friendship in the process, which holds the promise that the chemistry will be heard on the tracks in both the quality of the artists voice and the production values. Since both artist and producer have already established themselves as being among the best, there is little doubt that the record will deliver. Foster, in fact, expressed that he felt that Seal was the only vocalist in the world who could handle the challenge of singing so ambitious a collection of songs as that which constitutes "Soul".

In anticipation of the release, Seals website contains audio and video samples and a great deal of information on the project, as well as the complete track listing. On November 11, the legends of soul will receive a worthy tribute, indeed, from a most accomplished artist.
