California Moving Made Easy

| by Robert Blake | May 06, 2008
Moving can be an exciting, yet stressful time in anyone's life. Whether you're moving from San Francisco to the warmth of San Diego or going the opposite direction, a few tips will help you make the most of your move, as well as avoid the hassles and pitfalls that can plague you.

The first thing you need to do is to decide if you will use professional movers or do it yourself. There are pros and cons to both sides of the coin. Professional movers are much more convenient; quite a few companies will even pack your belongings for you. The drawback to using a moving company is that it will cost you more cash up front.

Moving yourself is more affordable, but much more time consuming. Renting a truck, packing your belongings and loading that truck all take up valuable time. If you're in a rush, this is not the option for you. However, if you have the time and the patience, it can save you some of that hard earned cash, making both you and your wallet happier.

Moving on your own will necessitate several things. You'll need to develop a list of items you need, such as boxes, tape, markers, padding material and more. You should also put some though into the truck rental company that you'll be using. Find out about insurance on the vehicle; most companies are fully covered, but may try to sell you a supplemental policy. When you pick up the vehicle from the company, make sure that you inspect it for any damage. This should be noted on your rental agreement before you take possession of the truck.

Using professional movers will save you time, but research is still an important part of the process. Avoid brokers; agents who charge you for a list of moving companies or who will outsource your move to a tertiary company. Dealing only with the moving company will help you save cash as well as ensure that you understand who you are dealing with. California movers should also be licensed and bonded; check with the California Better Business Bureau to make sure that they are what they profess to be. Additionally, supplemental insurance offered through moving companies is actually a good deal and the best way to ensure that your possessions are protected in the case of an accident during the move.
