Karate Kids Kick in the New School Year

Across the nation, people are finding out the secret of martial arts. In fact, it is now one of the fastest growing and most popular activities for adults and children. As the new school year kicks into gear, many families are finding that now is the perfect time to start their child in martial arts.

Children trained in martial arts are often given an edge over their peers because of the life skills they learn through their Karate or Tae Kwon Do classes. In addition to a healthy development of social skills, children also learn the kind of focus and discipline that helps them succeed in the academic world and their everyday life. Martial arts is also a very viable alternative extra-curricular activity for children who do not find an outlet in school provided activities. Parents are often amazed at the difference martial arts classes makes in their children.

When looking for a good martial arts school for children in your area, there are some key things that parents should consider. One of the first things you’ll notice is that martial arts schools offer a number of different styles such as: Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Judo, and Kung Fu. Some schools may offer several of the above and all are beneficial; however, parents should note that what is most important is not the style as much as the way the classes are structured, along with the teaching skill of the instructor.

In some schools, students of all ages, kids and adults, are lumped into the same class. Children benefit most when classes are specific to their age group and level of comprehension. The next thing to be considered is how the classes are taught. For instance, some classes place emphasis on competition while others teach strategies for real fighting and are more aggressive.

There are also instructors who provide a more nurturing and instructing environment. Master Instructor Steven Doss of Premier Martial Arts in Austin, Tx recommends finding a school that offers a free trial class. This is important because it allows parents to get a feel for the school, meet the teachers, and it gives their child a chance to experience what they will be learning in class. They will also have the opportunity to see how the classes are taught and if their child will benefit. The thing to look for in classes is that they are structured and teach discipline, and teach the life skills of the martial arts. Most important to kids however, classes also have to be fun. If we know one thing about children its that they need to enjoy what they are doing to really stick with it, so the combination is really important.

One of the most appealing aspects for parents are the values and life skills that their children learn. Kids enrolled in classes are shown to exhibit elevated levels of self confidence and self discipline. Children that learn self defense skills rarely if ever have to use them. The confidence and the self esteem they build and exhibit prevents them from being a victim of bullying. In addition to learning defensive moves, children are also taught the appropriate times to use their actions knowing to employ “common sense before self defense.” Good martial arts instruction instills the value of perseverance and stresses the importance to children of being leaders instead of followers so that they can better face the challenges that they encounter everyday at school. Parents are recognizing in their children values that will not only benefit them as children, but prepare them to have integrity as adults.

At top rated martial arts schools, like Premier Martial Arts in Austin, Tx, instructors teach that “Martial arts begins and ends with respect,” and emphasize the core values of Respect, Discipline and Self Control. These are characteristics that most parents would undoubtedly be proud for their children to exhibit. This is perhaps the most encouraging aspect of martial arts training for children. While building physical skills and having a lot of fun, they also will`develop a positive “Yes, I Can” attitude. Certainly, we could all do with a little more of that.
