Autism - Denis Leary and Others

| by Tammy Lessick | October 31, 2008
I have read a lot about celebrities and their views regarding Autism. I am the mother of a wonderful 9yr old boy who is diagnosed with Autism. I am not an expert, nor would I ever promote myself as one. I am en expert on what my family is going through, specifically in regards to my son. I will offer advice based on what I have experienced, offer suggestions, and listen when someone just needs to vent. I will never tell someone what treatment they need to use to help their child. I will never tell someone what diet or medicines or supplements their child should be on. And I will never tell a parent that they do not know what they are talking about in regards to their own child. In regards to my child, yes. As I said before, no one knows my child better than me. I have my own website, http://www.learningfelt.com, that I sell Story Time Felts on, and I have dedicated several pages to my site on the subject of Autism. I give information regarding my son, post articles written by others that are informative, and feature families with a child with Autism that are inspirational.

When I see or hear a celebrity, such as Jenny, discuss Autism as though she is the ultimate authority, it makes me mad. She is one mother. That is it. She is only the ultimate authority on her child. Then I hear about celebrities such as Michael Savage and Dennis Leary who have decided to make comments about Autism, one by way of their radio show, the other by way of their book. What gives them the right to comment on Autism at all? They do not have a child with Autism. They do not work with children with Autism. How dare they say anything, turn around afterwards and say they were misinterpreted? They have no business discussing Autism and their opinions when they have no experience or education in this area. The only reason I can see for them to do so is publicity and for that, I say, shame on you both and others like you who use such a serious and emotionally volatile subject to promote yourselves.

There is a young man with Autism, who is 27 and lives in Texas. His name is Bryan. He has a short radio show that he broadcasts with the help of his friend Jim. He is holding a special event on Nov. 20 and I challenge Michael Savage and Denis Leary to attend this event and account for their words publicly. Bryan is a wonderful and inspirational young man, who has become a role model to my son. For more information about the Nov. 20 event, please visit http://learningfelt.com/bryanradio.aspx.
