The following five mini articles in this post is based on the visit by Roving Eye to one of the oldest teacher training institutions in Malabar, the Government College of Teacher Education, Calicut
A. Rape of Nature is about the reckless cutting down of trees in the college
B. Improper Morality is about a shameless act by a teacher
C. A Bio waste Sham is about the setting up of a few sham bio waste plants
D. Architectural Blunder dwells on an inanity regarding ventilation
E. Magazine Manipulation is about the publication of two versions of the College Magazine

A. Rape of Nature

The Crime
Three trees over fifty years old in the Government College of Teacher Education, Calicut were axed in April 2008 through the orders of the Principal of the college ably supported by the coordinator of the College National Accreditation and Assessment Council Self Appraisal Report.

The Offence according to the Principal
Tree Number One: dirties the old building through dry leaves and dried twigs which regularly fall on the tiled roof .

Tree Number Two: a mango tree tempts children in the neighbouring school who fling stones to pluck mangoes. Some off tangent stones occasionally land on the tiled roof causing damage.

Tree Number Three: An apparently harmless but huge shade giving tree for the Pedagogic Park, whose branches spread widely.

Observation

Roving Eye found that the three trees have often given , the students , plenty of shade on hot summer days .When a child in a nearby Secondary school who is also a lover of Nature , heard about the axing of not one ,but three trees, with tears the child pounded the teacher who narrated this rape of Nature with the following questions which leaves us adults absolutely dumb.

1. Those trees give us both shade and life giving Oxygen. After such noble tasks it sheds leaves. But it takes only one hour labour to clean the roofs.

2. Did not the ignoramus coordinator in his younger days throw stones at mangoes?

Comment

The child appears to have more sense than both the Principal and the NAAC Self appraisal coordinato. What use is the gallons of waste the heartless Principal dumps in the toilet everyday, compared to some dry leaves on the roof? What kind of teacher educators do they both make who do not understand the psychology of a child?

What charges should we press against these two enemies of the planet? Tell me reader.

B. Improper morality

The crime
The Coordinator of the NAAC self appraisal report in view of the impending visit by the NAAC inspection team ordered the trainees of the college to give a boosted rating, contrary to the honest and objective rating of performance of the teachers which the students did during the month of May.

The offence
If teacher educators display improper morality what kind of teachers will we have in future?

Observation

Realizing that their own competence is likely to be questioned , the teachers out of fear threatens students to give a boosted rating .

Comment

Roving Eye has only this to be say to the shameless teachers of the college. If you want a boosted rating why not fill up the Teacher Performance Sheet yourself ?

C. A Bio waste Sham

The Crime

Professor Ignatius Konnikkara of the University of Calicut had pioneered the setting up of cheap bio waste disposal units using old torn buckets and damaged or abandoned drainage pipes.

In an attempt to impress the NAAC inspection team which is to visit the Government College of Teacher Education, Calicut, the Principal of the college orders the hasty setting up of eight bio waste plants in a poor colony in Nadakkavu , Calicut.

The pioneer, Professor Konnikkara in his conception of cheap bio waste plants had suggested use of old torn buckets and discarded pipes. But for setting up the bio waste plants eight PVC pipes of 5 inch diameter and two metres length and eight new buckets were purchased using the PTA money forcibly collected from the parents.

The offence

Roving Eye was shocked to learn that the students of the college were directed to cut by half the newly purchased buckets before immersing it in the sand. Had these new buckets been given to the inmates of the colony they could have used it to carry safe drinking water from nearby public taps. Further, the colony already has a waste disposal facility of the Corporation of Calicut and the bio waste plant set up is a waste in itself especially because PTA money was diverted for such work .

Observation
The use of new buckets and pipes just to set up bio waste plants was essentially meant to impress the NAAC inspection team which is expected to visit the college shortly.

Comment

Can such waste management be justified? Readers please comment.

D. Architectural Blunder

The Crime

The college built in native architectural style was recently renovated. The building has a roof height of twenty metres with huge glass windows placed at the roof level. They were built by British engineers with the prime intention of good acoustics and air circulation. But when renovated, in March 2008, false roofing of five metres height was set up blocking air circulation and cutting off light entering through the windows placed at the roof level.

The Offence
The cabins newly built for the teachers in a hall with a high roof are now dark because of the false roofing and suffocates the college faculty owing to very poor air circulation.

Observation
Roving Eye has no doubt that the person who ordered the setting up of a false roofing has demonstrated dubious intelligence.

Comment
Who should be kicked in the butt for such outrageous blunder? Readers why dont you react?

E. Magazine Manipulation

The Crime
The Government College of Teacher Education, Calicut in the academic year 2006.. 2007 published two versions of their College Magazine.

The Offence
Roving Eye wonders what impression will a student studying in the college get on seeing two versions of their college magazine in their college library? This is no doubt a fraudulent act.

Observation

It appears to be a covert attempt to impress the NAAC inspection team by presenting a college magazine in colour with fewer mistakes than the originally published black and white magazine.

Comment
Readers you say, should such fraudulent acts go unpunished?
