Here are some auto insurance basics:
Bodily Injury - protects others for injuries you cause while driving your vehicle. Actually, BI protects you as well. If you hit another driver and cause injuries, your BI coverage helps ensure the "other" party will not seek access to your assets. Be cautious: do not carry too little BI. I recommend $100,000 per person for nearly anyone, more for those who have assets and a nice income to protect.
Property damage - protects the property of others you damage while driving your vehicle. Most of the time, this will be other vehicles. Do not be caught with a small PD coverage, such as $10,000. If you hit an SUV or a luxury vehicle you could be responsible for a very hefty repair bill. I would highly recommend at least $50,000 but $100,000 is better.
Uninsured motorist - provides medical coverage for occupants in your vehicle if the other driver is at fault and has no insurance
Underinsured motorist - provides medical coverage for occupants in your vehicle if the other driver is at fault and has too little coverage (too little BI).
Medical - provides medical coverage for occupants in your vehicle if you are at fault in an accident.
Collision - pays to fix your vehicle or to provide a lump sum buyout if it is totalled in claims where your vehicle is damaged while moving.
Comprehensive - pays to fix your vehicle in non-moving claims (theft, vandalism, etc).
