Cars and Speed Get Your Leg from that Accelerator and Save Money on Fuel
| by Napoleon Miles | November 05, 2008
Speed Thrills but Kills - That phrase used to be a common sight on straight stretches of road where there was more temptation to speed. You know, the long, bare areas of the highway without intersections or obstructions just begging to see how fast you can go.
Of course the message got imprinted on the mind once you passed it often enough and when you get the urge to speed for a thrill its a matter of remembering things like that. The few moments of thrill dont just cost you extra money per mile but it can potentially cost lives too which are always priceless.
What's the fun in driving at the posted speed limits? A few over won't hurt. Or will it? And it is not all about the dangers of over speeding only.
Your pocket takes a hard hit every time you decide its the way to impress your girlfriend. She might however prefer to enjoy going out to a romantic dinner instead. And if you work on it, there can be enough money saved for it by your efficient driving.
The fact is, when you are driving at a lower speed in the highest gear you can, you are being your efficient best.
What does this mean? In top gear, 55 to 60 miles is the optimum speed. Over that and you will actually lose on gas mileage, at a rate of 5mph to 20 cents a gallon. That might not seem like very much, but every cent adds up when filling your tank.
