Cars and Efficiency - Stay off the Road in Rush Hours and Save on Fuel

| by Napoleon Miles | November 05, 2008
While you are driving forget about distance. Yes about distance! Think in terms of time and fuel instead. This has nothing to do with Einstein’s theory of relativity but can save you hundreds of dollars in fuel consumption.

The same distances can make your car’s engine burn more fuel in inefficient conditions.

That goes for getting to work and back as well. You can cruise through to work if you leave home at 8:20 instead of 8:40. Those 20 minutes can make the difference between a relaxed drive that takes 10 minutes when people are still in their homes and a 20 minute drive on the same roads where the traffic is enough to double your time on the road.

Add the pressure you are putting yourself under to get to work on time everyday and your future medical bills for the blood pressure problems and other serious medical problems such as stroke. Add also the raised gas expenditures because you chose to drive at the wrong time plus the extra emissions from your car.

All combined really take the decision away from you. Leave home 20 minutes early. For those few minutes you gain much benefit.

And when you are about to leave work, it is actually worth the effort to call home and check if the family needs something from the store on the way home. Most of the time you can save fuel by picking up the laundry on your way home instead of getting home and then having to go out again.
