| by Napoleon Miles | November 05, 2008
Your cars air conditioner may increase the load on your engine. Hence you car will burn more fuel if your air conditioner is kept on. However this may not apply to long term journeys. In fact here you may save money by letting your air conditioner on and closing your cars windows.
But what is the case when you go for short term journeys or drive in the town? In this case your air conditioner will be a load on your engine and will make your car burn more gas. You can however develop the appropriate habits that can help you save money on gas that was previously consumed by your air conditioner.
Ever got in the car to go to the store and turned the AC on? 10 minutes drive gets you to the destination and then you are in the store for an hour. Then you again turn the AC on when you get back in the car and drive home.
The AC probably wasnt even able to cool the car properly within such a short period.
By the time you get back the temperature has risen again and the cooling has to start all over again. So the energy used to run the AC was basically wasted.
You never gained enough speed in those 10 minutes within the city traffic for the drag factor to have mattered much and the weather outside was not bad enough to really need the air conditioning.
The whole waste can be avoided if you understand the common sense behind the use of air conditioning and the simple act of rolling down the windows.
